Poultry and Eggs

Whatever your concerns are when it comes to buying chicken, turkey, and eggs our poultry is far superior to conventional poultry and even most certified organic poultry.  Our birds and eggs are better for you, better tasting, live happier lives, improve the environment, do not encourage antibiotic resistant germs or parasites, and support the local economy as well as family farms.  This all has to do with how we raise them.  You are welcome to come out and see it for yourself first hand.  (Try asking Tyson or Purdue for a tour and see how far you get.  There is a reason.)  All of our poultry are raised in portable pens outside in the fresh air and sunshine.  These pens get moved once to three times a day onto fresh grass depending on the size of the birds and weather.  Our birds are protected from the weather and predators (we tried a free range system at one point and lost over 45% of our first batch of layers to a predator in one night) while still getting fresh air and room to move.  They also get to express their instincts - they get to scratch and peck and act like animals.

This is how our system works. Our birds are moved into our mobile pens called “Chicken Tractors” as soon as they are old enough to handle the temperature swings outside. We do not cut off their beaks, clip their wings or physically modify them in any way.  The pens are moved often enough that they have constant access to fresh grass and bugs, making up twenty percent of their diet.  It also keeps them in a clean environment.  There is no fecal dust, the manure is put right on the ground where is immediately available for the grass and you should see how the grass grows after the chickens have been there. Our birds never receive any kind of antibiotics, hormones or drugs of any kind.  Our birds are healthy and we don’t need those things to cover up a flawed system.

The best part is when you have poultry that is that healthy you can taste the difference.  This goes for eggs as well as meat.  It is a wonderful feeling to know that you are doing something right for yourself, the animals, the environment, and it tastes so much better to boot.  What a win / win situation!

Another thing to consider about how we are doing things is that we deal directly with you, the customer.  You can see what we do, every step of the way, there are no secrets.  We are building relationships and trust between the consumer and the producer.  We truly care about what we are doing and how we raise our animals.
